A new challenge

After 2 and a half intense years, my tenure as a Postdoc in the ESAT-STADIUS group at KU Leuven has come to a close. As I move on, however, I have to say that I will always be grateful to all my colleagues and friends in Belgium, who all contributed in their own way to shape this period of my life into an unforgettable experience.

I’m thrilled to announce that I have joined the group of Prof. Andrea Benucci at RIKEN-BSI in Japan as a 2-year JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow. I’m very much looking forward to what I’m sure will be another great experience, in a country I have always been fascinated by.

Workshop at Fudan University

From May 20 to May 23, I had the pleasure to attend the International Workshop on Mathematical Aspects of Data Science, held at Fudan University (Shanghai, China) as an invited speaker. I had the pleasure to meet many distinguished colleagues in the field as well as several bright local students. A great experience, and my first taste of one of the world’s most fascinating countries.

Visit at ETH Zürich

From November 24 to 28, I had the pleasure to visit the Data Analytics Lab (Department of Computer Science) at ETH Zürich, hosted by Prof. Thomas Hoffman and Dr. Martin Jaggi. During the visit, I presented an invited seminar titled “Frank-Wolfe optimization for large-scale machine learning”.

MLSS 2015 Kyoto

I’m back from two intensive and amazing weeks in Japan, where I attended the 2015 Summer School in Machine Learning, hosted by the University of Kyoto. It has been an amazing event, starring many top-notch lecturers in ML and over 400 participants in total. I want to thank in particular all of the Japanese friends I met during the meeting for their great hospitality and kindness. ありがとうございました!

Also, before the school, I had the great pleasure to make a short research visit to the RIKEN-BSI institute in Tokyo (August 19-21), hosted by Prof. Andrea Benucci. During my visit, I presented a seminar talk titled “An optimization-based framework for large-scale machine learning”.
